Prey

(Brian Holmes)
"Prey"

The moon casts shadows on the walls of my room.
Wild animals waiting, waiting.
They wait for me to sleep to devour my dreams.
Pray they can't see my eyes.

The wolf on the far wall,
Ears already poised to hear my thoughts.
The tiger on the ceiling,
With stuccoed claws, sharp to tear my hopes.
They wait for me to sleep to devour my dreams.
Pray they can't see my eyes.

It's morning. The shadows gone. My dreams gone.
Now the substance of a surreal jungle,
Whose shadowy inhabitants
Fear not removal of their light.

The risen sun seems eternity away.
I lie supine across the bed,
Hand in sweaty hand fearing my approaching fate.
The wind screams.
They wait for me to sleep to devour my dreams.
Pray they can't see my eyes.

The carrion birds are gathering.
I feel crucified, fearing, fearing,
The claws of a black cat and infinite eyes,
Eyes as black as a dying love.
They wait for me to sleep to devour my dreams.
Pray they can't see my eyes.

It's morning. The shadows gone. My dreams gone.
Now the substance of a surreal jungle,
Whose shadowy inhabitants
Fear not removal of their light.
