Firefly

(Brian Holmes)
"Firefly"

As I was lost in the center of a jet black forest,
Wet with heavy humid air, sitting on a damp hollow mossy log,
The sound of weeping leaves and slithering things unseen
Surrounded me and my despair.
Alone and still, something changed when a happy little toadstool
Hiccuped the arrival of an unexpected guest.
I met a firefly whose light arrived before my eyes,
And she asked me to converse awhile:

Firefly, oh firefly, lead me away from here.
I've lost my way through choices made,
And now I live in fear.

My gift is my light, it's yours tonight, but before I lead you out,
What led you here to be alone in darkness and in doubt?

Your pulsing light a welcome sight for color's turned to grey,
So if you'll lead I'll follow you and tell my tale today:
I used to play and laugh each day.
The laughter spread to lovers and friends.
The world was fertile and green back then.
Days were long and the sun was bright,
So we leaned toward the sun and as we grew,
We felt the fertile earth delight.
Firefly, oh firefly, the perfect fruit was formed.
The gentle flesh and sweetness
Were the son from which we warmed.

But I was given a jar, with a very tight lid,
And offered a chance to store it away.

I placed it on the shelf where I thought that it was safe,
And each day I'd visit the life that I had.
I'd stare in the jar to make sure I saw its light.
I guess I forgot to punch holes in the lid.

Firefly, oh firefly, I watched its light decay.
And what I thought I could preserve,
I had to set it free.
And the world that I sought, so sunny and new,
Was a frightening field, barren and stale,
So new seeds were sewn.
The plants that were grown stretched toward the sky,
And for awhile I thought that life was vital and fine.
Firefly, a thicket formed, confusing and tight.
The taller trees curved inward to canopy the light.
Thorns and stingers, berries and vines.

So now I'm lost in the center of a jet black forest,
Wet with heavy, humid air,
Sitting on a damp, hollow mossy log,
Alone and still, alone and still.

Firefly, oh firefly, lead me away from here.
Was it you I stored away, must I live in fear.
Firefly, oh firefly, lead me away from here.
Firefly, oh firefly, lead me away from here.
